Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.
Swimming with whale sharks at Saleh Bay means a pre-dawn boat from Labuhan Jambu to a bagan, a fishing platform with a lift-net, then snorkelling near the surface while sharks feed at the net. Operators disagree on the boat time. A 2021 study saw sharks at bagans from about 05:00 to 09:00 and not afterwards. No sighting is guaranteed.
What does a morning of swimming with whale sharks at Saleh Bay look like?
Published accounts agree on the outline and disagree on the clock. You start in the dark at Labuhan Jambu (some sources spell it Labuan Jambu), ride out to a bagan, float near the surface while sharks feed at the net, and head back before the morning is far gone. Everything below is what operators, press and researchers report. This desk has no first-hand log of its own.
| Who says it | Start | Boat ride | With the sharks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean Earth Travels, operator itinerary | Leaves 04:00 | About one hour | Swim 05:00 to 08:00, back at 09:00 |
| Kompas, quoting a local operator | Leaves 05:00 | About 1 hour 40 minutes | Two hours of interaction before return |
| The Langkah Travel, operator | Leaves around 04:00 | About two hours | Sharks usually appear around 06:00 |
| Asik Travel, tour seller | Meet around 03:30 | At platforms by about 05:30 | In the water from around 06:00 |
| My Bali Trips, tour seller | 01:00 hotel pick-up in Sumbawa Besar, boat start 03:00 | Not stated | Not stated |
Read those rows as separate claims. They come from different sellers and cannot be averaged into one timetable. For why Saleh Bay whale sharks gather here at all, start with our overview. Ask any seller which bagan area it works and how long the ride has been taking that season.
The sequence usually runs like this:
- Getting to the harbour. Sleeping in Sumbawa Besar pushes the alarm far earlier. Neptune Scuba Diving, an operator, notes that some people try it as a single day with a 2am pick-up and advises sleeping in the village instead. The 01:00 pick-up in the table is a different seller's time for the same idea. Our page on Labuhan Jambu, the village behind the trips, covers what is there.
- The boat. The Langkah Travel names a begoq, a traditional fishing boat that seats ten, as the boat from the village, and Traveloka names the same type. Amanwana, a resort, runs its own speedboat excursion from Moyo, a different starting point altogether.
- The bagan. The frame is wooden, its bright lamps pull in small fish, crustaceans and squid after dark, and a large lift-net brings up anchovies, scads and mackerels, according to a paper in the journal Diversity.
- The water. An IUCN shark specialist group factsheet says observers regularly see sharks suck baitfish through the outside of the net.
- The return. Ocean Earth Travels has guests back at 09:00. Others give no return time, so ask if you have a road transfer or flight the same day.
Why does it start so early?
The start time follows the sharks. A 2021 study places them at bagans between about 05:00 and 09:00, and after that it stopped seeing them there. That study's fieldwork ran from November 2019 to January 2020, so it is a short window of observation and not a rule for every day of the year. Still, every operator timetable above is built around the same early hours, and none offers a late-morning departure.
In practice, a boat that reaches the platforms after 09:00 has probably missed the period the study describes. It also explains why a ride of one hour and a ride of two hours lead to such different wake-up times. Sightings themselves are never certain, and we know of no reliable success rate. Our page on whether whale sharks are guaranteed at Saleh Bay goes through what operators claim.
How long is the boat ride from Labuhan Jambu?
Sources give three different answers, and they do not reconcile. Ocean Earth Travels' itinerary says about one hour by traditional boat, while the same company's blog says about two. A local operator quoted by Kompas says about 1 hour 40 minutes. The Langkah Travel puts it at about two hours. Asik Travel's timings, a 03:30 meeting and arrival by about 05:30, sit nearer the longer figures, although a meeting time is not a departure time.
Plan for the longest figure until a seller tells you otherwise in writing. The Langkah Travel describes these boats as open-deck, so that time is spent in the open, and the same ride comes back again afterwards. A speedboat or a different starting point changes the sum, so an answer from one company tells you little about another.
How are you meant to enter and behave in the water?
Most sources describe snorkelling as enough, and diving as optional. My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, says snorkelling is enough for most visitors, since feeding happens just under the surface. Ocean Earth Travels makes a similar point: the bay is deep, roughly 70 metres in parts, yet encounters happen in the top few metres around the bagan.
A marine ministry guideline document wants snorkellers to keep to a rope or floating bar that the operator supplies, wants boats moored on the bagan, and sets three metres from the side of the shark as the closest approach. Asik Travel lists no jumping in as part of the code it publishes. Kompas reports that local rules prohibit touching and camera lights and ask visitors not to wear jewellery. Antara reports a cap of 20 swimmers or divers each half hour.
The status of each of those documents differs, and so do the listed distances. Our page on Saleh Bay whale shark rules sets them side by side.
It helps to know what size of animal you will be near. The IUCN factsheet reports that of 108 identified sharks, 99% were juveniles or sub-adults. The 2021 study measured 2.5 to 7 metres, averaging 4.86 metres, among sharks it photographed. "Juvenile" here still means several metres of fish moving past you.
How long can you stay with the sharks?
Here the sellers and the guideline pull in different directions. The ministry document limits snorkelling and diving to 60 minutes. Antara's figure is 20 people per 30 minutes, so ask how that limit works in practice. Against that, the operator quoted by Kompas speaks of two hours of interaction, Ocean Earth Travels schedules a swim from 05:00 to 08:00, and My Best Places to Visit describes nearly two hours with more than five sharks beneath one bagan on a single visit, which runs past the 60-minute figure.
A published window is not the same thing as time in the water. Some of those hours may be spent waiting on the boat or the platform. When comparing offers, ask how many minutes each person gets in the water, how turns work if other boats are present, and whether the seller works to the ministry document's 60-minute figure.
What can non-swimmers do?
Amanwana says non-swimmers can watch from the boat on its excursion. That is one resort's statement about its own trip. Sources on the begoq trips from Labuhan Jambu do not say the same, so ask directly whether someone who stays aboard can see anything, and whether they would pay the same.
The Langkah Travel accepts children who already swim and snorkel comfortably, alongside a parent, and points very young ones elsewhere. Life jackets appear in Ocean Earth Travels' list of inclusions, and Asik Travel calls them required. Neither statement tells you how a nervous swimmer copes in deep open water, so be frank with whoever you book. Our page asking whether it is safe to swim with these sharks covers the risks.
What is usually included, and what do you still have to arrange?
One operator's list gives a useful baseline. Ocean Earth Travels' open trip lists breakfast, snorkelling gear, life jackets, entrance fees and GoPro documentation, and leaves out accommodation and transfers. Other sellers may package these differently. The price table on this page shows published figures from third parties, with sources and check dates. They are not our prices. Our Saleh Bay whale shark cost guide explains the layers, the Saleh Bay whale shark tour checklist covers what to ask, and the season page compares months.
- Is the conservation or entrance fee inside the price, or paid on the day?
- Who is the local guide, and how many guests share one boat?
- What happens to the money if the sea is too rough or no shark appears?
- Does the price cover a pick-up, or do you need to reach the harbour yourself?
What should you bring on a Saleh Bay whale shark trip?
Two published lists give a starting point. Amanwana's trade guide tells excursion guests to bring comfortable swimwear and coral-safe sunscreen, and asks them to take off jewellery and metal accessories. Peter Orsel, a travel photographer, says the tour supplied snorkel gear and that your own mask is worth bringing. He adds that the bay has jellyfish, so a swim shirt helps, and suggests a dry bag. One blogger's advice is not a packing standard, so ask your seller what it supplies, including life jackets in your size.
How do you photograph a whale shark at a bagan?
Flash and camera lights are out under the codes on our rules page, so the job falls to natural light. Peter Orsel reports that the crew on his boat filmed on GoPros at no extra charge, in vertical 1080p, and took no stills. For composition he suggests a wide angle from about five metres, which also sits beyond the three-metre figure in the ministry document, and a colour filter. Those are one photographer's notes from one trip, though Ocean Earth Travels also lists GoPro documentation among its inclusions.
What else do people ask before a Saleh Bay whale shark morning?
What happens on a whale shark morning in Saleh Bay?
You leave Labuhan Jambu before or around dawn, ride to a bagan, and snorkel near the net if sharks are present. Ocean Earth Travels has guests back by 09:00. Timings vary by seller.
What time do boats leave for the bagans?
Sellers differ. Ocean Earth Travels and The Langkah Travel say about 04:00, a local operator quoted by Kompas says 05:00, Asik Travel says guests meet around 03:30, and My Bali Trips lists a 03:00 boat start.
Do I need to be a diver to see whale sharks in Saleh Bay?
Sources describe the encounter as happening in the top few metres, so snorkelling is the usual way in. The ministry guideline document asks a recognised dive licence of divers only, as summarised on our rules page.
How long can you stay in the water with Saleh Bay whale sharks?
A ministry guideline document sets 60 minutes for snorkelling and diving. Some sellers and one blog describe about two hours, so ask each seller how many minutes each person actually gets in the water.
Can non-swimmers see the whale sharks from the boat?
Amanwana says non-swimmers can watch from the boat on its own excursion. Other sources do not confirm the same for boats from Labuhan Jambu, so ask before you pay.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. No official tariff is cited, so fee rows come from operators and listings. These are not our prices or offers. Figures change and sources disagree, so check the source before you rely on one.
