Are whale sharks guaranteed in Saleh Bay? No. They are wild animals, and even Amanwana, a resort that sells the excursion, says sightings cannot be guaranteed. The evidence is thin: one small research trip log, fisher reports and operators' own claims. Where sellers offer a guarantee, Asik Travel says it generally means a partial refund, not a sighting.

Are whale sharks guaranteed in Saleh Bay by anyone?

Nobody selling these trips can honestly promise an animal. Some of them say so outright. Amanwana says whale sharks can be seen all year, tending to be most active and visible around the new moon, and that sightings cannot be guaranteed. My Bali Trips, a tour seller, states that it cannot be held responsible for the presence of whale sharks, which it calls wild and free. Asik Travel, another seller, says guarantees are generally partial refunds, not sightings, and often apply only on half-day trips.

So a page offering a "guarantee" is usually describing money, and what it covers needs reading closely. Our Saleh Bay whale shark overview sets this in context. The same applies to any phrase like "almost guaranteed", which has no measurement behind it that a buyer can check.

What does the research trip record show?

A little. The one published trip log comes from a 2021 study: of 11 research trips between November 2019 and January 2020, eight had whale sharks and three did not. It covers a small sample, in one wet-season transition, from one research team going about its own work. Turning that into a percentage and applying it to your holiday would claim far more than the study does, so it is not a sighting rate.

Two more counts sit in an earlier paper: a survey count of four sharks in May 2018 and seven in June 2018, close to bagans. Those show numbers present on survey days, and they say nothing about how often boats leave without seeing a shark.

Even so, the three empty trips matter. They are the clearest published sign that researchers working in the bay, without a sales reason to report otherwise, had trips with no sharks.

What do operators claim?

Figures from sellers are more confident and much harder to check. The factsheet row is there for contrast.

What do operators claim?
SourceClaimWhat it cannot show
The Langkah Travel, operatorOver 95% of its guests over 8+ years swam with at least one whale sharkSelf-reported, with no audit available; says nothing of your dates
Kompas, quoting an operatorOne point usually has one to five sharks a day, at least one, described as tentativeAn operator's own summary, and "at least one" is qualified in the same breath
Ocean Earth Travels, operatorSightings peak in August and September, with July and August the busiestConflicts with the factsheet's March and April
IUCN shark specialist group factsheetObservations year-round for 2017 to 2022, most in March and AprilObservation counts can reflect survey effort, so this is not a success rate
Amanwana, resortMost active and visible around the new moonA resort's observation, with no data given

A high operator rate may well be sincere. It still comes from the party that benefits from it, and it may mix seasons, group sizes and days when the trip was cancelled before it left. Ask a seller how the number was counted, and whether cancelled mornings are included. The season page goes through the month-by-month disagreement.

How many sharks might you see?

Most reports describe a handful of sharks at one platform, and none of them is a forecast.

  • Bagan fishers told one study, around 2018, that two to four sharks nearly always visited a bagan at 7am and stayed about an hour. This is a fisher report and not a count.
  • The operator quoted by Kompas gives one to five at one point in a day.
  • Dive Happy, a dive publisher, reports up to five under one bagan on its visits in 2024 and 2025.
  • My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, reports more than five beneath a bagan on one visit.

Fisher reports are valuable, and they have limits. In August 2024, bagan fishermen in eastern Saleh Bay reported five sightings of a small whale shark estimated at 1.2 to 1.5 metres. Without photographs, those may be one shark or several. The same difficulty applies when anyone says how many sharks they saw from a boat, particularly when animals surface and disappear around a platform.

What do guarantees cover?

Read the wording on four points before you pay.

  1. What counts as a sighting. A shark seen from the boat for one minute may count. Ask whether "swam with" is the test.
  2. What you get back. Asik Travel describes partial refunds. The Langkah Travel says a partial refund or rescheduling can be discussed if a guest misses out, and "can be discussed" is not an entitlement.
  3. Which trips it applies to. Asik Travel says often half-day trips only, so a multi-day package may fall outside it.
  4. Which costs stay lost. Flights, road transfers and hotel nights are usually separate purchases, and a boat refund will not touch them.

Our page on how the tours are sold covers the wider contract questions.

What can cancel a morning?

Weather is the clearest documented case: a storm in February 2025 stopped viewing trips for several days, as our weather page records. Few itineraries have several spare days.

Timing is the other limit: the sharks' time at the platforms is a morning affair, as our page on how bagans work explains, so a late boat can miss it. The platform itself is a variable too. The Langkah Travel says a local guide confirms active bagans with their owners the night before, which implies that not every platform is active every night. Ask the seller how many mornings it lost in the past year and how it handled them.

Does adding a second morning help?

It gives you another attempt, and it also covers a single lost weather day, though not a multi-day storm. If seeing a shark is the whole reason for the journey, plan for the possibility of missing out, and decide beforehand whether the trip would still be worth it.

What else do people ask about the chances of seeing whale sharks in Saleh Bay?

Are whale sharks guaranteed in Saleh Bay?

No. Whale sharks are wild, and sellers including Amanwana and My Bali Trips say in their own terms that sightings cannot be promised or that they accept no responsibility for the animals being present.

What are the chances of seeing a whale shark?

No reliable rate exists. One study logged sharks on eight of 11 research trips in a single season, and one operator claims over 95% for its own guests. Neither figure should be treated as your odds.

What does a Saleh Bay whale shark guarantee actually mean?

Asik Travel, a tour seller, says guarantees are generally partial refunds, often on half-day trips only. The Langkah Travel says a refund or rescheduling can be discussed. Ask for the exact wording before you pay.

How many sharks might appear at a bagan?

Reports differ. Fishers told one study two to four, an operator told Kompas one to five, and Dive Happy reports up to five. None is a forecast.

What cancels a Saleh Bay whale shark morning?

Weather is the documented cause. A February 2025 storm stopped viewing trips for several days. Sources also describe short morning activity windows, so late arrival can cost you the encounter.

How do I reach the desk?

To check what a clause says before you ask the seller, send the wording to the desk on WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or by email at bd@juaraholding.com. Its reply is not legal advice. The desk cannot promise you a shark. If an offer follows, its terms on missed sightings are stated in writing, and only that document binds anyone. Note our commercial interest: requests can lead to a paid booking, as the about page explains.
