Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.

No single Saleh Bay whale sharks price exists, because a trip is a stack of separate costs: local fees, a begoq boat, the bagan crew, a guide, road transfers and a bed, shared across however many people travel. Published figures, each with its source, are in the price table on this page. No published tariff is cited on this site.
What goes into the Saleh Bay whale sharks price?
Each layer is charged on a different basis, and that basis explains most of the variation you will see in quotes. Some layers scale with heads, others with boats or cars.
| Cost layer | How listings charge it | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Conservation and entrance fees | Per person | Which fees a seller lists, and whether they are already bundled |
| Begoq fishing boat | Per boat, for up to ten people | Distance to the active bagan, according to The Langkah Travel |
| Bagan owner and crew | Per bagan | How many platforms you visit, and what the fee covers |
| Local guide | Listed as a separate fee by Traveloka | Whether a package already includes one |
| Road transfer | Per car, one way | Start point: Bima, Sumbawa Besar, Poto Tano or Sape |
| Stay and meals | Per person in homestays, per room in villas | Standard, and how few rooms are free on your dates |
A quoted figure may contain all of these, or just one. Before comparing two quotes, write down which layers each one covers. The Saleh Bay whale sharks overview explains what those layers pay for. The Langkah Travel and a Traveloka guide both describe a visitor assembling the layers separately, while Ocean Earth Travels folds items such as entrance fees and gear into one trip price.
Which local fees do sources list?
Three names appear. The Langkah Travel and Traveloka each list a Saleh Bay conservation fee and an entrance fee, per person. A publisher, Sumbawa Whalesharks, lists a community fee charged per encounter, and its figure differs from the other two. These may be the same charges under other names or genuinely separate ones, and the sources do not settle that.
Every fee row in the price table comes from a seller or a listing. Kompas.com, quoting the provincial fisheries head, says entry procedures are being set through a regional public service agency, which suggests this could become more formal. Until a published tariff appears, ask what will be collected at the port, and whether you get a receipt.
Why does group size change so much?
Most of the expensive layers are shared. A begoq carries up to ten people, a bagan fee covers the platform rather than the person, and a transfer is priced per car. A solo traveller pays all of that alone, while ten people split it ten ways. Per-person fees are the only part that barely changes with numbers.
The price table shows this in three sellers' rows, but read the labels with care because they do not use the same basis. Ocean Earth Travels states private trip figures as a total for the group. The Langkah Travel and Adeeva Tours state theirs per person. Comparing a total against a per-head figure is the easiest mistake to make on this topic, and it can make a pricier trip look like the lower quote.
That is the trade an open trip offers. You share the boat with strangers, and in exchange you pay a share rather than the whole. If you are alone or a couple, ask whether a seat on a shared boat is available on your dates before you price a private one. Our guide to choosing a Saleh Bay whale shark tour sets out the difference.
What do listed trips include and leave out?
Ocean Earth Travels is the clearest example because it publishes both sides. Its open trip bundles entrance fees, breakfast, snorkelling gear, life jackets and GoPro documentation, and it leaves accommodation and transfers to you. That one operator's list is not a local standard, so use it as a checklist rather than an expectation. Ask each seller about these points:
- Are conservation, entrance and any community fees inside the figure, or paid on the day?
- Is the bagan fee included, and how many bagans does it cover?
- Does the price start at the village, the airport or your hotel?
- Who pays for a car if the morning is cancelled and you need to change plans?
- Are masks, fins and life jackets supplied, in your sizes?
- Is a starting price tied to a minimum number of guests?
Why do published figures disagree?
Several reasons pile up. Dates differ: the Traveloka guide is undated, Kompas quotes a tour owner's starting price from April 2024, and Asik Travel gives a figure quoted in 2026. Bases differ, as described above. A figure labelled as a starting price may rest on a minimum group or other conditions, so ask what they are. Departure points differ too, so a trip from Sumbawa Besar carries a road leg that a trip from the village does not. Dates matter too: the Saleh Bay whale shark season page names the months one operator suggests for fewer boats, and our guide to swimming with whale sharks at Saleh Bay shows what a morning buys.
Terms also get priced in. Asik Travel reports that a so-called guarantee usually means part of your money back, not a promised sighting, and that half-day trips are often the only ones offering it. A trip with such a clause may cost differently for reasons that have nothing to do with the sea. Comparing like with like means lining up departure point, group size, inclusions and refund terms, and only then looking at the number.
Accommodation can push totals in a less obvious way. The province's tourism head told Suara NTB in January 2025 that the village had just 20 rooms to let, short of what rising visitor numbers need. It is a dated figure, but if village rooms are full you may have to sleep further away, which adds road time or an extra car. The options sellers name are set out in where to stay in Labuhan Jambu.
Where do fees go?
According to The Langkah Travel, the village fund and a village enterprise receive the conservation and entrance fees, and the Traveloka guide gives its own split of the entrance fee. Both are second-hand. The bagan fee is different in kind, since it pays a platform's owner and crew.
It also raises a question you may want answered before paying. The Traveloka guide says this fee includes small shrimp bait so that whale sharks stay at the bagan longer. That is a direct statement from a commercial listing, and it is undated. Sellers may handle this differently, so ask whether your bagan fee buys bait. Our page on Saleh Bay whale shark ethics explains why the answer matters.
How do you build a budget without guessing?
- Fix the start point and the group size, since those two decide most of the total.
- Decide between a shared seat and a whole boat.
- Pull comparable rows from the price table, and note each row's date and basis.
- Add what the rows leave out: transfers, a bed for the night before, meals.
- Add a spare morning, because a cancelled crossing with no spare day can mean no trip at all.
- Ask for the final figure in writing, with each layer named.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. No official tariff is cited, so fee rows come from operators and listings. These are not our prices or offers. Figures change and sources disagree, so check the source before you rely on one.

What do people ask about the Saleh Bay whale shark cost?
How much does a Saleh Bay whale shark trip cost?
It depends on start point, group size and what is bundled. The price table on this page shows published examples with dates, and only a written quote tells you the figure for your own trip.
What fees apply at Labuhan Jambu?
Sellers list a conservation fee and an entrance fee per person, and one publisher lists a community fee per encounter. We cite no official tariff, so ask what will be collected on the day.
Why are solo Saleh Bay whale shark trips far pricier?
A boat, a bagan fee and a car cost much the same for one person as for several. A solo traveller carries all of those alone, while a group of ten divides them.
Are entrance fees included in Saleh Bay whale shark tours?
Sometimes. Ocean Earth Travels lists them inside its open trip, but other sellers itemise them separately. Check each quote rather than assuming either way.
Where do Saleh Bay whale shark fees go?
The Langkah Travel names the village fund and a village enterprise as the recipients of conservation and entrance fees. That is an operator's account, with no audited figures behind it.
