Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.
No source describes an international-standard hotel in the village: The Langkah Travel, an operator, describes village rooms as homestay-level. Your realistic bases are a village homestay or Alffiah Hotel, a stay nearby named by operators or bloggers, Sumbawa Besar with a very early pick-up, or Moyo Island. Decide by what each base does to your morning.
Why does the base matter so much?
This trip has an unusual shape: the boat leaves in the dark, so your bed decides how much sleep you get. Neptune Scuba Diving, an operator, says people attempt a one-day trip from Sumbawa Besar with a 2am pick-up, and it advises sleeping in the village instead. My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, picked a hotel near the port for the same reason, to avoid a 2am drive. Their advice lines up, and it comes down to a choice between comfort and proximity. The Saleh Bay whale shark overview explains the early start behind this.
Saleh Bay accommodation falls into a few groups. The table sets out each one as sources describe it, including the hotels near Saleh Bay that operators and bloggers name. It records who named each place, and it is not a recommendation list. This guide does not run rooms, has not inspected any of them and offers no ratings.
| Base | Named or described by | Effect on your morning |
|---|---|---|
| Village homestay in Labuhan Jambu | The Langkah Travel; Traveloka guide | Shortest wait, simplest rooms |
| Alffiah Hotel, in the village | Peter Orsel; The Travel Shortcut, travel blogs | In the village; both blogs stayed there |
| Villa Aqila, about 10 minutes from the village | Ocean Earth Travels, which recommends it | Short transfer on that company's figure |
| Hotel Villa Beach Transit & Resto, close to the small port | My Best Places to Visit; packaged by My Bali Trips | Avoids the 2am drive, per the blog |
| Samawa Seaside Resort | Packaged by My Bali Trips | Distance to the boats not stated; ask |
| Sumbawa Besar | Neptune Scuba Diving; My Best Places to Visit | A pick-up around 2am |
| Moyo Island Resort or Maleo Moyo | Ocean Earth Travels, which works with them | Depends on how the property links to the boats; ask |
Is there a Labuhan Jambu hotel, or only village rooms?
Expect few rooms in a village the provincial tourism head places in Tarano district, Sumbawa Regency. The Langkah Travel says accommodation in Labuan Jambu is homestay-level and not international hotel standard, and elsewhere calls facilities basic, with patchy mobile signal. Traveloka's guide describes staying in a resident's home, with meals charged separately. Both of those are in the price table on this page, and their figures differ widely, so ask exactly what your nightly charge includes. Alffiah Hotel, where two travel blogs stayed, is covered in the section on nights below.
The number of beds is the bigger constraint. West Nusa Tenggara's tourism head said in January 2025 that the village had only 20 lodging rooms, too few for rising visitor numbers. That figure is nearly two years old at the time of writing, and it may be out of date. A village head told Kompas that residents had begun building lodgings, so the stock may have grown since then. In the same remarks, the tourism head complained that passengers on visiting boats often do not sleep ashore, which gives the village little income. A room in the village is one of the ways visitor spending stays there.
What should you confirm before paying for a Labuhan Jambu homestay? Ask about air conditioning or fans, a private bathroom, breakfast timing before a pre-dawn start, and whether the host can arrange a wake-up call or a walk to the boat. "Homestay-level" could cover a wide range. Families, and anyone who needs air conditioning or a private bathroom, should settle these points first. Ask early whether village rooms can be booked online, since signal can be patchy and a reply may take time. For wider context on the place itself, read the Labuhan Jambu village guide.
Which nearby stays do sources name?
Outside the village, three names appear, each with a commercial or personal source behind it, and you should read them with that in mind.
- Villa Aqila. Ocean Earth Travels recommends it and places it about 10 minutes from Labuhan Jambu. This is an operator's recommendation of a place it sends guests to, and its starting room figure is in the price table on this page.
- Hotel Villa Beach Transit & Resto. My Best Places to Visit stayed there, close to the small port. My Bali Trips, a seller, uses the same hotel in its packages, along with Samawa Seaside Resort, so one of the two mentions comes from a sale.
- Samawa Seaside Resort. It appears only in the My Bali Trips material. No road time to the boats is on record here, so get one before booking it as your pre-dawn base.
The My Bali Trips row in the price table covers a two-day group snorkelling trip with hotel. A package like that can settle the base question for you, but check which hotel is named and when pick-up is, because the name of the property does not by itself tell you the transfer time.
Is Sumbawa Besar workable?
It is workable if you accept the hour. Neptune Scuba Diving describes it as something people attempt, with a 2am pick-up, and My Bali Trips lists a 01:00 hotel pick-up. If you land the same day, you are also stacking that drive on top of a flight and a very short night. The road guide from Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu sets out the published drive times and what they imply.
The case for Sumbawa Besar is mainly about wanting a town, with the airport for your exit afterwards. This page names no Sumbawa Besar hotels for this trip. One useful split is to sleep in the town on arrival and move to the coast the following afternoon, leaving the very early start for a morning when you have slept. Whether a hotel there can arrange a boat is a question for that hotel and is not something to assume.
Anyone with a morning flight out the same day should look hard at the timing too. A morning on the water followed by the road leaves little margin for a same-day onward flight from Sumbawa Besar. Another night after the trip removes that pressure.
What about Moyo Island?
Moyo is a different kind of stay. Wikipedia describes it as an island off Sumbawa's north coast of 349 square kilometres, rising to 648 metres. Ocean Earth Travels names Moyo Island Resort and Maleo Moyo among properties it works with, and the price table on this page shows a starting figure for the first of them.
Being on an island means your pre-dawn start depends on a sea link and on whoever runs it. Ask a Moyo property directly, and in writing, how its guests reach the whale shark boats before assuming it works as a base. It makes more sense as part of a longer Sumbawa trip than as a shortcut to the sharks.
How many nights do visitors suggest, and what else is nearby?
Two travel blogs stayed at Alffiah Hotel in the village. Peter Orsel calls it one of the few options there and says it is set back from the main cross-island road. The Travel Shortcut calls it great. Neither is an inspection, and we have not stayed there. On length of stay, Orsel finds little to do beyond the morning trip, which for him ended around 10am, and The Travel Shortcut says two nights is plenty. SB Excursions, an operator counting from Bali, treats two nights as a minimum and three as comfortable, as our Bali page explains. For more from the trip, Orsel suggests Moyo Island for its waterfall.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. No official tariff is cited, so fee rows come from operators and listings. These are not our prices or offers. Figures change and sources disagree, so check the source before you rely on one.

What do people ask about staying near Saleh Bay?
Where should I stay for Saleh Bay whale sharks?
Neptune Scuba Diving, an operator, advises sleeping in the village, and a travel blog chose a hotel near the port. Staying close avoids a pick-up around 2am from Sumbawa Besar. Your choice depends on how much comfort you will trade for sleep.
Are there hotels in Labuhan Jambu?
The Langkah Travel says accommodation in the village is homestay-level, not international hotel standard. Two travel blogs stayed at Alffiah Hotel in the village, which one calls one of the few options there. Named places such as Villa Aqila and Hotel Villa Beach Transit are described by their sources as nearby or close to the small port.
Are homestays available in Labuhan Jambu?
Yes, according to The Langkah Travel and a Traveloka guide. Supply is limited: the provincial tourism head counted only 20 lodging rooms in the village in January 2025. Residents have been reported building more, so availability needs checking.
Can I stay in Sumbawa Besar instead?
You can, but Neptune Scuba Diving and a travel blog describe a 2am start for a same-day trip, and My Bali Trips lists a 01:00 pick-up. Neptune Scuba Diving advises against it in favour of sleeping in the village. It suits people who want a town base and accept a very short night.

How do I reach the desk?
Tell the desk your dates, group size and how early you are willing to start. It can pass on what is known and say what remains unclear, but it holds no rooms itself. A request might become a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest. A room counts as arranged only when a written offer names the property, price, any fee and the contracting company. WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or email bd@juaraholding.com.
Send the desk your dates and starting point. The desk replies in writing.
