Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu: road time and the pre-dawn problem

Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu is a road of about two or three hours, depending on who you ask: Kompas says about two from the airport, and one operator says about three. Boats leave before dawn, so the real decision is between a night drive from town and a bed in the village.

How long is the road from Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu?

Three sources give an estimate, and they do not agree. All of them count hours, and this page gives no distance in kilometres.

Kompas places the village in Tarano District, and it spells the name Labuan Jambu. Sources use both spellings, so search for each. For road travellers, Sumbawa Besar to Saleh Bay in practice means this run to the village, because that is where Kompas places the whale shark tourism area. Wikivoyage gives Sumbawa Besar as the capital, on the west side of the island, and names Poto Tano as the ferry port for Lombok. Plan around the longer figure. If two hours is right, you reach the village early with time to spare, and nothing is lost. If three is right and you planned on two, you could miss the boat. Ask the driver how long the run takes at that hour.

What time do pick-ups leave town?

The published times cluster in the small hours. My Bali Trips lists a 01:00 hotel pick-up in Sumbawa Besar and a 03:00 boat start from the village. Neptune Scuba Diving describes people trying a one-day trip on a 2am pick-up, and it steers them towards a night in the village instead. The two times do not match, and since they come from different sellers, both are worth checking against the boat you actually book.

Work backwards from the boat, because that clock decides everything. Beyond the 03:00 start above, sellers' times from the village vary:

Here is what that means in practice. For a 04:00 departure from the village, Kompas's two hours has you leaving Sumbawa Besar at 02:00, while Ocean Earth Travels' three hours has you leaving at 01:00. A 2am pick-up on the three-hour estimate would reach the village at 05:00, an hour after that boat has gone. So ask for the boat's departure time and the driver's start time together, in the same message.

Can you do it all in one morning?

Yes, sellers offer it, and private day tours from Sumbawa Besar, for one person and for ten, appear in the price table on this page. Being able to is a separate question from wanting to. A same-morning trip swaps sleep for a dark road, then an open-deck boat before sunrise. If the flight into SWQ lands the day before, nothing about the schedule forces you to sleep in town.

The flight picture is thin. Wikipedia lists Wings Air to Lombok and Denpasar, and a November 2026 snapshot on FlightsFrom shows the same two nonstop destinations with one airline, at 58 Lombok flights and 30 Bali flights scheduled for the following month. Those are counts for a month, not a timetable, and they can change. Check the airline for your date, particularly for the return, since a morning on the water followed by the road back rules out an early flight out. Ocean Earth Travels' itinerary has boats returning to the village at 09:00. Add Kompas's two hours and you could reach town around 11:00; add the operator's three and it is closer to noon, before any delay. Allow for that when you book the SWQ departure.

Should you sleep in town or the village?

Neptune Scuba Diving advises the village. My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, chose a hotel near the port specifically to avoid a 2am drive from Sumbawa Besar. One sells trips and the other reports a single traveller's choice, so take them as advice rather than evidence. The trade-off comes down to sleep against comfort, and the right answer changes with the group.

The Langkah Travel calls village lodging homestay-level rather than international hotel standard, and where to stay in Labuhan Jambu covers the places sellers name. Treat any availability you read online as a starting point, since rooms in the village are few.

How do transfers work?

Often as a separate purchase. Ocean Earth Travels lists rates per car from Bima, SWQ, Poto Tano and Sape to Labuhan Jambu, and it says accommodation and pick-up are excluded from its boat trip. So a boat price may not tell you how you reach the boat, and the SWQ to Labuhan Jambu leg can be a line item of its own. The price table on this page includes that operator's one-way SWQ car rate, which you can set beside the two day-tour rows to see the difference between buying a car and buying the whole day.

Before you confirm a car, settle these points:

• Is the rate one way or return, and does the driver wait during the boat trip?
• Does the rate change for a pick-up at 01:00?
• Where exactly is the meeting point at the village, and who is your contact if the car is late?
• Who has the boat operator's number, and will the boat wait at all?

Can you drive from Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu on the same morning?

Yes, tour sellers list pick-ups at 01:00 and people attempt it at 2am. The risk is the margin, because a late car can mean a missed boat, and the morning leaves little time for sleep.

Should you sleep in Labuhan Jambu before the whale shark boat?

One operator advises it and a travel blog chose to do it. Sleeping close by removes the night drive, but rooms are limited and simple, so check availability before you rely on the plan.
