How to get to Saleh Bay from Bali: fly to Sumbawa Besar or Bima and continue by road, or go overland and by sea through Lombok. A same-day trip does not work, according to SB Excursions, an operator that treats two nights as a practical minimum and three as comfortable. Check flights with the airline, as schedules change.
Can you see Saleh Bay on a Bali day trip?
No source here says you can. SB Excursions, an operator, says any operator selling a same-day trip from Bali is selling something other than Saleh Bay. It has a business reason to say so, since it sells its own Sumbawa trip. The arithmetic supports it anyway.
A 2021 study reports sharks around bagans only in the early morning, and tour sellers ask you to be at the harbour in Labuhan Jambu very early: Asik Travel says around 03:30, and Ocean Earth Travels leaves at 04:00. To make that from Bali on the same morning you would have to cross two islands in the middle of the night. No published itinerary suggests that can be done.
So treat a "day trip" offer with care, and ask where the boat leaves from, what animal encounter it promises, and at what time. Our page on what the morning involves sets out the published timings.
Which flights go from Bali?
There are two airports to look at, and a FlightsFrom snapshot and two Wikipedia pages are the only schedules we can point to. All three date quickly, so treat them as a reason to check the airline, and not as a timetable.
| Airport | What the source says about Bali | Source and date | Onward to Labuhan Jambu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sumbawa Besar (SWQ) | Nonstop to Bali with Wings Air, the only airline listed; 30 Bali flights scheduled for the following month, and 58 for Lombok | FlightsFrom, November 2026 snapshot; Wikipedia also lists Wings Air to Denpasar | About two hours by road per Kompas; about three per Ocean Earth Travels |
| Bima (BMU) | Wings Air and TransNusa to Denpasar | Wikipedia, undated list | No road time in our sources for this page |
So yes, there are direct flights from Bali to Sumbawa, on both listings. A monthly count is not a timetable, and the flight may set your whole plan, so look for it first, in both directions, before committing to anything else.
Sumbawa Besar is the route with published road times. Asik Travel describes the village as roughly two to three hours by road east of Sumbawa Besar, depending on the source, which is another reason to allow for the longer figure. The Bima airport lies about 10 kilometres south of Bima, and we have no sourced road time from there to the village. Ocean Earth Travels does list a per-car transfer from it, and our page on how to get to Saleh Bay covers all the entry points.
The price table on this page shows two published figures: SB Excursions' starting price and Ocean Earth Travels' car transfer from SWQ. Both belong to those companies and were checked on the month shown.
How long does the overland route take?
Long enough that it needs its own day. Wikivoyage says an overland-and-sea journey from Singaraja in Bali to Poto Tano takes 15 hours. Singaraja is on Bali's north coast, so if you start elsewhere on the island, add your own road time. Wikivoyage names Poto Tano as the ferry port from Lombok, and you are not finished there: the village is further along the island.
The last sea crossing is itself reported differently. The ticket agent Haqqi Tours puts the Kayangan to Poto Tano ferry at about 1 hour 30 minutes, with ASDP running it around the clock. The Langkah Travel gives about two hours for the same crossing. Neither figure includes waiting at the port.
SB Excursions says Sumbawa is two islands east of Bali and that either route eats most of a day each way. For the flight, that may depend on connections. For the overland route, it fits what Wikivoyage reports and may be generous. Choose it if you want to see the islands on the way, not to save time. The return from Saleh Bay to Bali costs you the same again.
A third pattern exists at sea. In January 2025 the province's tourism head described pinisi arriving from Bali and other ports, often with no overnight stay in the village. That is a multi-day boat trip and a very different purchase, so it is outside the scope of this page.
How many nights should you allow?
SB Excursions gives two nights as a practical minimum and three as comfortable. That is one operator's view and it sells these trips, so check its count against your own hours. The boat goes before dawn, so you must already be near the harbour the evening before. That is night one. After the boat you have a road trip and then a flight or ferry, and with limited flights you may not make the same day's departure. That is night two. Our Saleh Bay whale shark overview explains why the morning sets the whole plan.
| Plan | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two nights | Fly Bali to SWQ, road to the village area, sleep | Pre-dawn boat; Ocean Earth Travels' itinerary is back at 09:00; road back west, sleep | Fly to Bali | None |
| Three nights | As above | Boat, rest, sleep near the village | Spare morning in case the sea or the sharks did not cooperate; road back, sleep | Fly to Bali |
This is a planning sketch and not a package. No boat, flight or room in it is on offer here. The third night's value is the spare morning: sightings are never promised, and one morning is a single chance at wild animals. If the whale sharks are the main reason for your trip, a spare morning is the argument for three, though The Travel Shortcut, a travel blog that stayed in the village, says two nights is plenty. If the overland route is your choice, add the travel days to these numbers.
Lodging decides how early your alarm rings. Sleeping in Sumbawa Besar instead means a hotel pick-up in the small hours, so a bed nearer the harbour buys you sleep. See where to stay for Saleh Bay whale sharks for what is known about options.
How to get to Saleh Bay from Bali: which route is simplest?
On the sources available, a Wings Air flight to Sumbawa Besar followed by a road transfer is the route with the most published detail, and so the easiest to plan and check. That does not make it right for you. If the SWQ flights do not fit your dates, compare Bima. If you enjoy slow travel, or the flights are full, look at the overland crossing with a night in Lombok. In all cases, work backwards from the pre-dawn boat, and leave room between the boat and your flight home.
What else do Bali-based travellers ask?
How do you get to Saleh Bay from Bali?
Fly from Denpasar to Sumbawa Besar or Bima and continue by road to Labuhan Jambu, or travel overland and by sea through Lombok to Poto Tano. Check current flights with the airline.
Can you visit Saleh Bay on a day trip from Bali?
No, according to SB Excursions, which says any same-day offer from Bali is selling something other than Saleh Bay. The pre-dawn boat departure supports that view.
How many nights do you need for Saleh Bay from Bali?
SB Excursions, an operator, treats two nights as a practical minimum and three as comfortable. Add more if you take the overland route instead of flying.
Are there direct flights from Bali to Sumbawa?
A FlightsFrom snapshot from November 2026 listed Wings Air nonstop from Bali to Sumbawa Besar. Wikipedia lists Wings Air and TransNusa from Denpasar to Bima. Confirm with the airline before planning around them.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. No official tariff is cited, so fee rows come from operators and listings. These are not our prices or offers. Figures change and sources disagree, so check the source before you rely on one.

How do I reach the desk?
Send your Bali dates and how much slack you have to WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or bd@juaraholding.com. The desk can say what it knows about the route. Requests can lead to a paid booking, which is our commercial interest, and a reply does not hold a seat, a car or a room. Only a written offer binds.
Send the desk your dates and starting point. The desk replies in writing.
