Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.

Choose a Saleh Bay whale shark tour by its terms rather than its photographs: where it starts, who shares the boat, what the price leaves out, which registration and guide certificates it can show, whether bait is used, how many boats share a bagan, and what happens if no shark appears. Get those answers in writing before paying.

This page is a buyer's checklist, not a ranking. Operators are named below only as the source of a claim. Naming one is not a recommendation, since nothing here vouches for its safety, licences or conduct. An official quoted by Antara put the number of whale shark tour operators working the bay at 16 in early 2025, which gives some sense of how much choice exists. If this is your first look at the topic, our Saleh Bay whale shark overview explains the village and the bagans.

What kinds of trip do sellers offer?

Six formats recur, and they differ most in where they begin and who you share the boat with.

What kinds of trip do sellers offer?
FormatExample sourceTrade-off to weigh
Open trip from Labuhan JambuOcean Earth Travels; The Langkah TravelYou pay a share but do not choose your companions
Private boat from the villageOcean Earth Travels; The Langkah TravelWhole boat on your group, at a much higher cost for small groups
Day tour from Sumbawa BesarThe Langkah Travel; My Bali TripsNo night in the village, but a very early road leg
Two-day trip with a hotelMy Bali Trips; Adeeva ToursSleep before the boat, but you take the seller's chosen hotel
Overnight speedboat from LombokDive Happy, describing snorkellers' boatsSkips the road, but means a night at sea
Resort excursion by speedboatAmanwana, from MoyoRun by a resort rather than a village crew; it lets non-swimmers watch from the boat

The difference between an open and a private trip is mostly about who pays for the boat. A private charter puts the boat, the bagan fee and the guide on your group alone, as our Saleh Bay cost guide explains in detail. A Saleh Bay whale shark open trip shares those, and you should ask how many people the boat will carry on your date.

Sea-based routes change the experience in one more way. Kompas says Lombok-to-Bajo boat trips go straight to the fishing platform without stopping at the village. Dive Happy says snorkellers' speedboats run overnight from Lombok to reach the bagans first thing. If you want to meet local guides or see the village, ask whether your boat stops there. My Bali Trips names Hotel Villa Beach Transit and Samawa Seaside Resort in its packages; ask any seller which property you would get.

What do listed trips include and exclude?

The price table on this page has rows from several sellers, but the labels mask big differences in contents. One listing makes a useful template. Ocean Earth Travels counts gear and life jackets, breakfast, entrance fees and GoPro documentation as part of its open trip, while beds and transfers stay outside it. Pick-up is not part of it, so a boat price may not get you to the boat. Other sellers will differ, so ask for an itemised list. Meeting times differ as well, and our page on the road from Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu sets them side by side. Pay particular attention to the boat: The Langkah Travel and a Traveloka guide name the begoq, a traditional fishing boat, as the usual craft from the village, with capacity for ten. Ask whether yours is a begoq, and how many passengers it will carry.

What paperwork does the ministry guideline document ask of operators?

National requirements exist on paper, though their exact force is unclear. A marine ministry guideline document says operators must hold at least a tourism business registration and have a reservation mechanism, and that guides must hold named certifications. Our rules page explains why it should not be read as an enacted regulation. It also expects a signed waiver from tourists and a recognised dive licence from divers. For boats, it asks that engines be cut no closer than 30 metres from a shark, and that speed stay at 10 knots within one mile when approaching.

At provincial level, Kompas.com quotes the fisheries head as saying West Nusa Tenggara urges operators to hold guide certificates. That is an urging rather than a confirmed licence check. So ask for three things: the business registration, the guide's certificate, and the waiver you will be asked to sign. If a seller cannot show them, ask why and weigh the reply. For what the rules ask of swimmers, see our Saleh Bay whale shark rules page.

What should you ask about feeding and crowding?

There is evidence of a problem. A 2024 study recorded by FAO AGRIS finds that whale shark tourism harms shark welfare in the bay, and it logs many breaches by tourists and operators, calling for more monitoring. Against that, the claims about boat numbers diverge. The Langkah Travel quotes a ceiling of two boats per whale shark, plus three metres from the body, five from the tail and no flash. Ocean Earth Travels says crowding around one active bagan is common in the dry season, and that operators differ on enforcement. Both can be true of different days and crews, which is why you should ask directly.

  • Do you or the bagan crew add bait or fish to hold the sharks, and is it part of a fee I pay?
  • What do you do when more boats arrive than the limit you quote?
  • How many guests go in the water at once, and for how long?
  • What does your guide do if a guest touches a shark or chases one?
  • How do you pick the bagan? The Langkah Travel has a local guide check active ones with owners the night before; does yours?
  • Will you move on if the platform is crowded, even if it costs time?

Our page on Saleh Bay whale shark ethics sets out why bait matters, and the Saleh Bay whale shark season page lists the months one operator suggests for fewer boats. If you care who earns from your trip, ask whether the guides come from the village; the Pakek Torok page describes KAWAN Teluk Saleh, a youth community there. For how the morning itself runs, read swimming with whale sharks at Saleh Bay.

What do refund and guarantee terms mean?

Read them as money terms, since no one can promise a wild animal. Asik Travel says guarantees are generally partial refunds rather than sightings, and often apply only on half-day trips. The Langkah Travel claims over 95% of its guests across more than eight years swam with at least one whale shark, and says a partial refund or a new date can be discussed if not. That figure is self-reported. A claim like this tells you how a company sees itself, and a promise to discuss is not a refund term.

So get these points written down: what share comes back if no shark is seen, what happens when weather cancels the crossing rather than the sharks failing to appear, whether a second morning is offered in place of money, and who decides that conditions are unsafe. Cancellation by you and cancellation by the seller often carry different terms, so ask about both.

How do you compare two offers side by side?

Line up the same six facts for each seller: start point, boat type and passenger limit, inclusions, certificates shown, answer on bait and boat limits, and refund wording. If one seller answers all six in writing and another answers two, that gap may count for more than any difference in the headline figure.

Our desk is one possible route, and it should be judged by those same questions. A request sent to us can lead to a paid booking, which gives us a commercial interest, as our about page explains.

Which published prices did we check?

Public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. No official tariff is cited, so fee rows come from operators and listings. These are not our prices or offers. Figures change and sources disagree, so check the source before you rely on one.

What do buyers ask before booking a Saleh Bay whale shark tour?

How do I choose a Saleh Bay whale shark tour?

Compare start point, boat and passenger limit, inclusions, certificates, feeding practice and refund wording. Ask each seller the same questions in writing, and set the price aside until those answers line up.

What is the difference between open and private Saleh Bay trips?

An open trip shares the boat and its costs with other guests. A private trip puts those costs on your group. Ask in writing what say you get over timing.

What is usually included in a Saleh Bay whale shark tour?

There is no standard. One operator's open trip covers gear, breakfast, entrance fees and GoPro documentation, with beds and transfers left out. Ask for an itemised list.

Which feeding questions should I ask a Saleh Bay whale shark tour?

Ask whether bait or extra fish is used to hold sharks, whether a bagan fee pays for it, and what the guide does if a crew starts feeding while guests are in the water.

What does the ministry guideline document ask operators to hold?

A marine ministry guideline document names a tourism business registration and certified guides, but its legal status is unclear. Ask to see both documents rather than relying on a statement that they exist.
