By Saleh Bay Whale Shark Editorial Desk
Is it safe to swim with whale sharks in Saleh Bay? Sources describe a filter feeder, and one operator says no attack has been recorded. The risks they name are tail contact, open boats, rough crossings and a village The Langkah Travel calls basic. Nobody can guarantee safety, and this is not medical advice.
Are whale sharks dangerous to people?
Sources do not treat them as predators of people. National Geographic describes a filter feeder taking plankton and small fish near the surface. SB Excursions, an operator, says there is no recorded case of a whale shark attacking a person. Read it as one seller's statement, from a company with trips to sell; we cite no academic source for this wording.
A filter feeder can still hurt you by accident. This is a fish several metres long, and sources warn about its tail. The basics of a Saleh Bay whale shark trip are on our overview page.
Is it safe to swim with whale sharks in Saleh Bay once you are in the water?
That depends on your distance and your swimming. Published warnings are mostly about getting too close. My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, says most visitors only need to snorkel because sharks feed just below the surface.
| Risk to weigh | What the source says | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental tail bump | My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, calls it the main risk. Dive Happy warns against being thumped by a tail. | Keep clear of the tail. Listed distances are on our rules page. |
| Skin cuts from contact | The Langkah Travel says placoid scales can cut skin. | Another reason not to touch, on top of the ministry guideline document's ban on contact. |
| Deep open water | One study's trip coordinates had seabed more than 30 metres down. | Ask what rest point the boat provides. |
| Crowding in the water | Asik Travel lists a cap on people in the water and no jumping in, without calling either a risk. | Ask how turns are managed when several boats are at one bagan. |
Kompas also reports that local rules ask visitors not to wear jewellery. It gives no reason, and we will not supply one, but it is simple to follow. Lights for photography, scooters and jet skis are out under the guideline document, so a seller offering them is ignoring it.
The lack of a dated incident record for these trips is not evidence that nothing has happened.
What are the risks on the boat?
The Langkah Travel warns that boats are open-deck. Sellers describe a departure in the dark, as Asik Travel's timings show, and My Bali Trips recommends motion sickness pills if needed. A long ride on an open deck after a very short night is the part of the trip to think hard about if you tend to be seasick, or take any regular medication. That is a matter for you and your doctor, not for this page.
The time of year changes the odds. SB Excursions calls April to October the calmest crossings, with the fewest cancellations, and January and February the roughest. That is an operator's view, not a measurement. See Saleh Bay weather, wind and cancelled boats for the fuller picture. Ask who decides whether the boat goes.
Can children or non-swimmers go?
Possibly, and it depends on the child, the swimmer and the seller. The Langkah Travel says children can join if they swim and snorkel comfortably with a parent, and suggests other options for very young children. We know of no official minimum age for this trip. My Bali Trips describes its tour as suited to average physical abilities, which is a seller's general phrase.
For someone who cannot swim, Amanwana, a resort, says guests can watch from the boat on its own speedboat excursion. Asik Travel lists life jackets as required in its code. Tell the seller how well you swim, whatever flotation is supplied. Do not assume a safety talk either. Peter Orsel, a travel blogger, reports that his boat had no briefing before guests got in, so ask in advance what your crew explains and who watches swimmers in the water. The Travel Shortcut goes further and argues that being able to swim should be a requirement.
What must operators provide?
The most specific list is in the ministry guideline document, whose status is explained on our rules page. Operators, it says, must provide for a tourist-signed waiver, a ladder on the boat, and first aid or an emergency boat, and divers need a recognised licence. The code Asik Travel lists also asks for life jackets and a local guide per group.
Nothing on this site verifies that any given operator meets these. We do not rate or endorse companies. Before paying, you might ask:
- Is there a first aid kit on the boat, and who on board can use it?
- Is there a ladder, and can a tired swimmer climb it?
- What is the plan, and which boat, if someone is hurt on the water?
- What does the waiver you are signing actually release?
- Does your own travel insurance cover snorkelling on an open boat in Indonesia? Ask your insurer.
What happens if something goes wrong?
Medical care near the village is unverified, so find out before you travel. The Langkah Travel says mobile signal can be patchy and facilities in Labuan Jambu are basic. The nearest recompression chamber is unverified too, which matters most before diving.
What you can do is settle the practical questions in advance: who the operator would call, how long a boat takes back to the harbour, and where an injured guest would be taken. Anyone with a condition that makes a short night, a rough crossing or deep water risky should talk to a doctor first. Nothing here is medical or safety advice.
What else do people ask about safety on these trips?
Are whale sharks dangerous?
They are filter feeders, and SB Excursions, an operator, says no attack on a person has been recorded. My Best Places to Visit, a travel blog, calls an accidental tail bump the main risk if you get too close.
What are the real risks of swimming with Saleh Bay whale sharks?
Sources name tail contact and skin cuts from scales. Beyond the animal, one study's trip sites sat over deep water, boats are open-deck, and one operator calls village facilities basic.
Can children swim with whale sharks?
The Langkah Travel says children can join if they swim and snorkel comfortably with a parent, and suggests other options for very young children. Ask each seller, as this is one operator's policy.
What if I cannot swim on a Saleh Bay whale shark trip?
On its own excursion, Amanwana says, non-swimmers can stay aboard and watch. Other sellers may differ, so ask before paying, and say how well you swim.
Will I get seasick on a Saleh Bay whale shark boat?
You may. My Bali Trips recommends motion sickness pills if needed, and SB Excursions calls January and February the roughest months for crossings. A doctor or pharmacist is the right person to advise on pills.
