Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.

For Saleh Bay whale sharks from Lombok, sources report three options: the Kayangan to Poto Tano ferry followed by a long drive, a flight to Sumbawa Besar followed by a shorter one, or an overnight speedboat described by Dive Happy. The choice depends on your nights available and whether you want to sleep near the boats.

How do you reach Saleh Bay whale sharks from Lombok by ferry and road?

This route has the most published detail. Wikivoyage lists Poto Tano as Sumbawa's port for ferries from Lombok, and the crossing runs from Kayangan harbour.

  1. Cross from Kayangan to Poto Tano. Haqqi Tours, a ticket agent, gives about 1 hour 30 minutes on a service it says ASDP operates around the clock. The Langkah Travel, an operator, says about two hours. Both are published estimates for the same crossing, and neither says anything about queues or waiting for a sailing.
  2. Drive from Poto Tano to Labuhan Jambu. Kompas gives about four hours after the crossing. This guide has no verified road distance for the leg, so treat the time as a rough figure.
  3. Sleep near the boats, or arrange to arrive before they leave. Wikivoyage gives Sumbawa Besar as the capital on the island's west side, and our page on the Sumbawa Besar to Labuhan Jambu road covers the road from there.

The road leg of any Lombok to Labuhan Jambu plan is its own decision. Ocean Earth Travels lists per-car transfer rates from Poto Tano to Labuhan Jambu, and states that accommodation and pick-up are not part of its boat trip. The price table on this page shows its Poto Tano rate alongside two published Lombok packages from another operator. Those are third-party figures, and they should prompt a question about what each one covers. A transfer rate and a two-day trip price cannot be compared directly.

Public transport on this leg is not something the sources cited here describe in useful detail. Nor do they support a scheduled fast ferry between the islands, so check any such claim with the seller and the port before relying on it. If your own vehicle is coming, ask the ferry agent how vehicles are handled.

Is flying from Lombok quicker?

It cuts the road time. Kompas names this as the alternative: fly from Lombok Airport to Sumbawa's airport, then about two hours by road to Labuan Jambu. Ocean Earth Travels puts that same road leg at about three hours, so allow for the longer figure if your plan is tight.

The airport is Sumbawa Besar's SWQ, one of two on the island, with Wings Air flights to Lombok and Denpasar, per Wikipedia. FlightsFrom, in a November 2026 snapshot, listed one airline at SWQ and 58 Lombok flights scheduled for the following month. A snapshot like that shows that the route exists and rests on a single carrier. It says nothing about the day you want, so confirm the timetable and fare with the airline.

With only one carrier, a cancelled flight leaves you few options on the day, and a morning with the sharks has no room for delay. If the flight lands on the same day you plan to reach the boats, ask yourself what happens when it runs late.

What about overnight boats?

Dive Happy, a dive publisher, says speedboats for snorkellers drive from Lombok overnight to reach the bagans first thing in the morning. On that description the boat replaces the Sumbawa road. Kompas makes a similar point about Lombok-to-Bajo boat trips, which it says go directly to the fishing boat without stopping at Labuan Jambu.

A night at sea in a small boat is a different proposition from a ferry and a car, and the sources give no schedule, safety record or sea state data for it. If you are offered one, ask in writing:

  • How long the trip takes each way, and when it leaves and returns.
  • Who the contracting company is, and who skippers the boat.
  • What the boat carries for safety, and where passengers sit or sleep during the night.
  • What happens to the trip and the money if weather or a captain's decision turns it back.
  • Whether the trip stops in the village, if spending money locally matters to you.

The two-day Lombok trips in the price table do not, on their face, tell you which transport they use. That is another question for the seller.

Can you do Lombok to the whale sharks in one day?

Kompas describes a day trip from Lombok that crosses by boat and then drives about four hours. Read that alongside the morning timing and it looks demanding. The same article quotes a local operator with boats leaving Labuhan Jambu at 5am for about 1 hour 40 minutes. So a same-day plan by road has to work backward from a dawn departure, through a four-hour drive and a ferry, which means leaving Lombok late the previous night. Haqqi Tours' statement that the ferry runs around the clock makes that possible on paper. Ask any seller for the full timeline before you accept the description.

Which route suits what?

Which route suits what?
RouteTimes the sources giveSuitsWatch for
Ferry and road via Poto TanoCrossing about 1.5 hours (Haqqi Tours) or 2 hours (The Langkah Travel); drive about 4 hours (Kompas)Travellers with a spare night; people bringing their own vehicleFerry waits; a long drive; arranging a car on arrival
Flight and road via SWQRoad about 2 hours (Kompas) or 3 hours (Ocean Earth Travels); flight time not published in these sourcesShort trips and people who dislike long drivesOne carrier; schedule changes; same-day connections
Overnight boatOvernight, arriving first thing (Dive Happy); no duration publishedSnorkellers who accept a night on the water and want no road transferLittle published detail; weather; little or no time in the village

The deciding factor is usually how many nights you can spare. One spare night near the boats removes most of the time pressure from either land route. The broader guide to getting to Saleh Bay sets Lombok against the other gateways. The Saleh Bay whale shark overview covers what you are travelling for.

Which published prices did we check?

Public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. No official tariff is cited, so fee rows come from operators and listings. These are not our prices or offers. Figures change and sources disagree, so check the source before you rely on one.
